Courtesy, Etiquette, Inspiration

Courtesy and Etiquette in the SCA [Required]

Applicants must demonstrate a working knowledge of SCA courtesy and etiquette as it applies to their persona throughout the event by their deportment. A brief oral quiz may also take place during the informal discussions. Topic may include addressing nobility, officers, peers and servants; table manners (for your persona); and, of course, courtliness and common consideration and politeness.

Though Christiana was raised for most of her life in London England, and learned from Thomas’s staff and his lady, including himself, she is a strong will woman, and may place a point across abruptly and this was do to her upbringing with taking orders from men and directing the staff at the household and her husband’s business. When her second late husband passed away from the hunting accident in 1592 it left an impression of not seeking out another man and became a widow in her place of residence and business where her Etiquette may have become less involved. Etiquette, proper behavior was used in the meeting of John’s friends, and proper greeting to the officers and guild masters, and populous at her husband’s business.

She did not use punishment as others would on their servants, as she was one for a short period of time learning the servants’ positions. She respected them, and they in turn respected her. The Reeve would be greeted with a bit of smile, and properly address my gentle servant, and her lady servants would be greeted the same with my gentle lady and in turn they greeted her with lady. She was not involved too much with renfrew, but if it were she would do proper matter of showing etiquette. With her most loyal servant, she would even leave him the key to still room, and to some of the chest to obtain wine, and spirits or her fine jewelry. Christiana would even play indoor games, and try not to loose her temper if she lost, and she definitely would not whip her servants, if they did something wrong, but would scold them, not to do it again. Servants were the backbone of the estate, and the workers of her husband’s business were the backbone. Treated with respect for who they were, not what they were both John’s and Christiana’s attitude.

While Christiana Elizabeth Constable of Beverley, Yorkshire, England in 1593, governed by the rein of Queen Elizabeth, thus only employs titles of office, church and country and is not a frequent traveler to the southwestern part of England. While visiting the region known as Devon she will be visiting Appledore, and Christiana will do her utmost to respect the local customs and term of address for the duration of her stay.

Christiana will be bringing her loyal servants along to help in making her stay comfortable, and to assist an any matter that may arise or needs to be accomplished from bringing drink to helping Christiana prepare for the day’s events.
